I have a very elaborate pre shave ritual because to be quite honest, I don't want to take the chance of having many cuts or major irritation because I work in a very professional setting where, let's face it (pun intended), looks matter. I have received 2 shaves from very respectable barber shops here in Chicago and while they did apply quite a bit of prep, I left with some cuts and a lot of irritation. I am not knocking the approach as they obviously know what they are doing and it's not like one barber did it this way and the others did something else but EVERY barber did it this way and it looks like it works for them. And two, the lather before the second and final pass is the thinnest lather I've ever seen applied, however, with even both of these mentioned, the gentleman always seems, from the looks of it at least, to have an irritation and cut free shave. No hot towels, no lather applied then whiped off before lathering for the initial pass, not even a splash of warm water. One, there is absolutely no prep whatsoever.
